She still surprises me…

We get this really good Trail Mix at Sams Club…the brand is Member’s Mark (Sam’s brand) and it’s normally very good quality.

It comes in a three-pound package. It has M&M’s, almonds, raisins, peanuts, and cashews.

Salty and sweet. Crunchy and chewy. And reasonably nutritious for a snack etc.

Except lately…it hadn’t been as tasty. I looked at the package we bought and opened a couple days ago, and it had no cashews in it. None. Zero.

Bummer. Says on the label it should. Has everything else. Still tasty, just not quite the same.

Took the more than half-full bag back to Sams. They cheerfully gave me a new one. I could see in the new package that it has cashews. The returns lady looked at the one I brought back and said, “Wierd.”

Sooooo….I get home from work today…hungry. Grab the bag of trail mix…the one I got yesterday…and started munching.

You guessed it, no cashews. None. Zero.

I *KNOW* it had ‘em. I saw ‘em in the package when I got it. The returns clerk pointed them out and I agreed that the new bag was not defective.

I began to suspect. Surely not. But it couldn’t be anything else.

“Honey?” I asked the wife as I held up the bag, “what the heck happened to all the cashews in here?”

She blushed clear to her toes…which answered the question.

She picked them all out and ate them.

Every last one.

“I just like the cashews.”

Yeah, I think I get that.

We could just *buy* a bag of cashews…

And then I looked. We have a can of cashews in the cupboard.

18 years and she still surprises me. I’m still chuckling. Life is ever so much more interesting with loved ones and friends in your life!

Should I try to explain this to Sams?

Zerbert…

Y’all might recall these two posts about Zerbert…the big black lab…

This can’t be good
News…

We had to put Zerbert down this afternoon.

He DID have a sinus infection, and the antibiotics cleared it right up
(hence why he was feeling better Thursday or so last week).

Unfortunately the very large swelling on his head did not go down, and he
took a turn for the worse over the weekend.

We called the vet and he said it may be an abscess and they’d have to risk
surgery (that was a last resort as in the past as his bloodwork and
advanced age indicated he may not survive the anthesisia).

Anyway, we took him in for that and the mass didn’t feel like an abscess
to the vet, so they did an ultrasound.

It was a tumor, not an abscess, and they were fairly certain there were
more in his lungs from listening to his breathing.

We suspected this weekend and we knew for sure this afternoon that he
couldn’t see out of his right eye or hear out of that ear. He was shaking
just trying to stand there, but his tail was still wagging and he just
wanted to go home. It breaks my heart to have to be the one to decide he
could not…it’s a role I despise.

But, he lived a good life, and was a great dog.

Zerbert the big black lab, who never stopped smiling and wagging…and
whose motto was always, “BEST! IDEA! EVER!”

18 years…

She’s put up with me for 18 years now.

Anniversaries are cause for reflection…for examination…for both looking back and looking forward.

Good times, difficult times, joys and sorrows. All can be recalled and remembered. Where do they fit? What was their impact? How do they influence the overall life? How do they change the complete relationship?

The memories focused on, and the impact allowed…determine what the future holds. The universe delivers what’s expected of it.

Reflections of the past…are echoes of the future.

I commissioned this on our 16th…reflection.
Reflections of the past...are echos of the future.

Good news…mostly/sorta…

Well, good news about yesterday’s post! (maybe/sorta/mostly)

Zerbert the big black dog gets to fight another day!

The Vet’s pretty sure it’s an infection.

He didn’t have any luck piercing it/draining it.

A couple of shots, some powerful antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to stuff down his throat, and we are to bring him back in three days. Then we’ll know for sure.

The dog is obviously not feeling well but the wife said he had his typical flat-out fun on the car-ride to and from the vet…and that’s a good sign. As far as that dog is concerned…car rides are the Best. Idea. Ever!

Well, this can’t be good.

Y’all might remember Zerbert, our old greybeard lab-dog.

This pic is three years ago…
Zerbert the labdog.

Yeah, he’s an old man. He was an old man when we got him. Loyal, smart, guards the wife with dedication.

He’s something around 15 years old…way old for a lab…and he’s slowing down. He doesn’t always hear the mailman nowadays. He occasionally trips when he’s taking the wife for a walk. Sometimes he doesn’t want to go…

He can’t get up from a lying down position on a tile floor…

Something new this weekend…this came up in under 48 hours.
Zerbert...

Well, this can’t be good….the picture doesn’t clearly show it, but he has a large lump in the right side of his head…in front of and above the ear. It is hard, so maybe under the bone…not really sure. Maybe an inch or so protrusion and a couple inches in diameter. The pupil in that eye is blown. He’s responsive, but listless and obviously doesn’t feel well, although he is eating and drinking.

He’ll be off to the vet in the morning…I’m not looking forward to the news…

A better (worse) picture:
Zerbert has a lump...

Survived this round.

Belo Tech layed off a bunch of folks Friday…that’s the division I work for in AH Belo Corp (parent company of The Dallas Morning News). I support newpaper publishing operations for three major papers.

Out of my immediate group they took 20% of our workforce. We are very good at what we do. We’ve won awards for our innovation and developments. We were swamped and the newspapers, as dismal as times are, still make money. The decisions seem to made without long term consequences or survival for the business in mind. Our publisher just tripled his salary and they paid out performance bonuses to upper management last month. I’m still shaking my head.

And they whacked ‘em on Friday…so the insurance wouldn’t carry over into March. Layed off on Friday and told you have no insurance starting Sunday. Chicken-sh!t ‘tards.

I’m here by myself today. The boss is off, another coworker is at the doc, another is scheduled for the night-shift…and so, it’s me. To support three papers.

Heh…good luck with all that. I’m still not sure I’ll be answering the phone this week.

I’ve been here a while and stay plugged in. Some of my sources feel they’ll hit us again in June.

Dallas Morning News is still to come. It’ll be a bunch there.

I think I need a better plan.
