Trips and Travels / Dragons in the Badlands-Alberta,Canada
« on: May 11, 2010, 04:41:10 PM »
-Well here I go ,Hosting\Organizing the 1st annual "Dragons in the Badlands" Valkyrie Aberta chapter, run for this weekend May14/15\16,2010.
- It won't be Sturgis kinda thingy yet but it seems we'll have a dozen or so Valks from mostly the Calgary\Edmonton area showing up.
-I did a dry run of the route on Monday\10th and most of the roads are in good shape -save 1- small stretch- of resurfacing.
-T-shirts\hats will be available there.
-All the eating stops have been notified of our plan.
-The biker friendly barley stops know we are coming.
-Motel "HOO-DOO" has been helpful getting us all in the same area so we can have a little parking lot party afterward.
- Looks to be about a 220mi \350km loop in and out of the Drumheller valley and way,way up on the flat open plains, where we can really stretch the ladies out & let um' run so to speak.
-I will post photo bucket pics on Mon17 p.m.
-So stay tuned.

Trips and Travels / Daniel would've been proud
« on: March 31, 2010, 01:42:08 PM »
So my dad goes and has a heart attack the other day and they ship to the Drum hospital an hour away. He's getting angeoplast [sp] and should be fine, thanx.
So the first night he's in I'm worried and need to get there fast,I jump on the Mistress[2000]Valk and go. There was a wind warning out and transport trucks were being held at inspection stops because of the wind actually blowing some trucks over {i'm talking real windy}
How bad can it be on a bike...surprising not all that bad I was to find out, but I've ridden in strong winds out here alot.So I visit with him for a bit and then head out.
Now I've ridden in wind and I've ridden at night , but I've never  ridden at night in tornado force winds, how bad can it be ? Not that bad at all actually, heated grips would've been nice but other than that I was fine again.
-Day 2;
Another wind warning, no problem, oh except there is also a nasty storm coming this way.I don't chance it and I take the cage.
Visit ,head home and wow I wish I had brought my camera, the storm clouds were some of the most amazing I've ever seen in my life. Orange sunset underneath, jet black curled under clouds at the leading edge and showers of snow, sleet, and rain stripping down all thru the center. Real Armagedon type stuff.
Would've looked great on the cover of a book.
I went thru with no problem in the car. Then began to think how I would have made out on the bike. I pulled over to see if it would go were I thought it would.
It did, had I been on the bike I would have turned south 10mkm earlier then west, then south again.. The whole time I would have been right on the leading edge of it but bone dry for the last 50 kms.
Now I get where Daniel is coming from with these things, they're amazing and you can out run them if you just use your head a little..maybe next time

General Discussion / snow,oh,oh
« on: October 08, 2009, 02:45:52 PM »
  :'(
It started snowing here off & on the last 2 days but now the temp is starting to plumet.
I wanted to hit 12000kms this season  on the Valk[need only700 kms more],gotta hope for a balmy November, but then it's hunting season and there won't be much ride time..
anyone have a m/c trailer that'll hold a moose.? the Valks pulling power won't be an issue, hows about a spiked knobby tire for the rear and a ski attached to the front so I can get her out back in the bush aways?? kiddin....

Daniel ...I've seen those track/ski combo things for dirt bikes and quads at bike shows.. you should sketch a valk decked out with it..now that would be cool.."only available to Canadian Valkaholics" so we can ride our rigs awhile longer into the fall...lol
later

I'll order mine- a hybred- with dual track and single ski, that'll look better on the tourer with hard bags...hhmmm? maybe an I.S  fairing to keep me paws warm. ;D :D

Trips and Travels / night rides
« on: September 11, 2009, 07:59:45 PM »
So here we are,I'll start with a question.
What's your opinion on those "deer whistles" you stick on you car\bike?
My experience is this:
On long night trips ,vacation etc, in the cage I've generally got them stuck somewhere-the only deer I've clipped was on a car that I didn't have them on.
Part Deux..I put two on the sides of the Valk rad and never had a close call..that is until they both fell off in the car wash...dun=don=dunnn. insert scary music here.
We were running back from Drumheller after a day of just kinda picking random roads and seeing if they indeed end up where the map said they would{surprisingly many don't,or they're not paved or even oiled like it says they are} hhmm, maybe I can do that when I retire, just ride around and make maps of proper roads that are bike friendly.....
Anyway we start running out of the Badlands valley and going nearly straight uphill thru some twisties, just one more corner and she's flat open praire-and dark as Pooh - if ya get my drift,-no moon nothing, banking the Mistress to the right....there she steps-the biggest mule deer doe I ever don't want to meet.
She's 10ft out\2ft to the right, and comin ,I lock up the rear and Mistress slides left 3ft,doe lifts her head-misses the saddle bag and lightly grazes the wifes right hand......WHOA! that was close.
Wife was a little twitchy after that so we pulled over for a bit and had a cig...I wwas fffine III guesss?
We were both on full alert after that for the last hour home...and the whistles got super glued back on the next day.
Had similar runs since with no futher incidents.
hhmm

General Discussion / road side distress?
« on: September 08, 2009, 08:54:18 AM »
Here's something I've been thinking about for awhile.. ???
Everytime we are pulled over on the side of the road for a break or what ever, other riders pull over to see if we're o.k.[which is great don't get me wrong],but, Sometimes they miss our indication that we're o.k
When I see someone on the road side I generally beep the horn in advance to give them time to give the the thumbs up or o.k hand signal.
My question is ..is there another signal to show that you are in need of help-fuel,mechanical,etc?
I thought maybe placing a helmet or piece of luggage on the road say 10-15 feet behind the bike would maybe be a good universal signal that you need assistance .This could be seen at night as you pass by slowly also..
I also carry those glow sticks in my pack to light the area around the bike incase of a night mishap should occur, they're  small, and a  cheap, good investment in safety.
whatcha think?

Tech Discussion / brown/blueing pipes
« on: September 07, 2009, 09:54:57 PM »
So a few of the header pipes on my Valk are blueing/browning, is it running too rich or lean?
Has anyone had any success restoring the chrome back once this happens?
Option two will be to get them black chromed in the future.
thanx

Trips and Travels / Banff\Jasper,Alberta pics
« on: August 11, 2009, 05:55:16 AM »
Had a great run 1200km\750mi up thru Banff #1a to Jasper #93 and back down the #22,speeds were down which was good, my neck was sore from looking up at the peaks. The Valk {Mistress} performed flawlessly at altitude.
Then wifey and I did a little burn this week thru the badlands- Nacmine,Drumheller,Wayne, secondary roads all the way. What a great week off and stayed close to home too. People come from all over the word to see what is in my own back yard..great ride.the monkey goes everywhere with us
