Upon closer inspection I have found a cross head screw embedded in the tire, well that explains that :-(

Hi, so I've learning to ride on my bike, and riding about 12 miles a day. Just in the last couple of days I've been starting to notice a rear 'wiggle' on the bike when i accelerate or turn at speed (leaning). Is this a loss of grip and normal (it is getting colder so maybe ice?) and if so what can i do to make sure my turns and acceleration is solid and lower chances of anything nasty?

Thanks for any pointers.

huh, that might explain it, I did cycle the ignition off and on before it started. Just galling to have dinged it after only a week. I had been planning on posting this week to thank you for inspiring me to ride, and i've been having a great time. Even in the rain I was enjoying myself, up to the little whoopsy anyway. Now I get to practice using my spanners i guess. Weirdly, it looks like one of the bolts retaining the instrument panel has vanished.

So, I finally did it, brought a bike, I've been commuting to university on it every day for a week now. A pretty much mint Yamaha YBR125 with only 8kish on the clock. First time riding in heavyish rain, and ......
I dropped it, I can hardly say it threw me :-/. Going round a small steeply descending left hand corner, only to find a small river running across the small city street. Braked badly (with the front brakes) and physics did it's thing, sliding the rear wheel out from under me. Thankfully my lovely wife had insisted I wear full gear, so I remained dry and only collected a small bruise on my leg.

Picking myself and the bike up, I joyfully discover that while both left indicator stalks are dangling, they are also made of rubber, and pop back into place with little effort, still working. I check everything, put the left mirror back into place and try the starter.

The wretched thing is sulking like I'm an idiot or something and won't start. I check the bike again, fruitlessly try kickstarting it, and finally spot the clutch leaver has been rotated round a bit, perhaps crimping it a bit. I pump the lever and all seems okayish. Eventually try the starter again and it works. Weird, could have sworn I asked for a bike with an eager to please temperament?

Now I get valuable experience working on my bike, rather earlier than I had hoped :-(. Oh well, it got me home so I'm sure I can fix it, I'm a very practical engineer.

Introductions Here / New Guy

Hi, I'm a Brit living in Bristol.  I'm looking to start riding this year, in part because of the articles I've read on this website.  Haven't read the books yet, but once I find some I will.  Does anybody have any advice for a tall youngish (25) and still poor chap that wants to start riding around Britain?

I'm thinking of getting a small (125cc) dual-sport bike of some description for my test and the first couple of years, then doing the full license test once I got some experience and trading up a couple of hundred ccs.

I know next to nothing about riding or gear, whats good and whats not.  Any suggestions?  Manufacturers to steer clear of?
