Someone is posting your story of the Bryce Street squirrel story without giving you credit as the author.  In my opinion, it's "somewhat" okay to post the story (it gives you exposure, but violates your intellectual property so I'm mixed on the subject), but the author needs to cite you as the author of the story.  He doesn't do that, so people think he wrote it.  I posted a reply to the originator of the post saying you wrote that and they are guilty of plaguarism.  The URL for this is http://pub42.bravenet.com/forum/3562429698/fetch/886393/

To elaborate on the intellectual property debate.  Sometimes others posting your work violating your copyright can work in your favor.  I read your squirrel story on some website.  However, it cited you as the author.  As a result I have bought all of your books.  If someone hadn't violated your IP I would have never read any of your writing and I would never had bought all of your books.  So the IP issue is a mixed issue for me.

Yep...it's a tough issue...

If it's on the internet, it's going to propogate...BUT the orginal author should always be cited...and some folks are actually scraping content off the net and selling it for profit.

I try to notify folks that repost my stuff without credit...just so everybody is aware...copyright is automatic. They've no right to repost without permission and MUST retain credit even with permission.

The ones that cheeze me off are the ones that edit it (or not) and then take credit for it.

Thanks for setting them straight!

I've seen that story around in several different versions, generally edited to substitute another type of bike, usually the author attribution is also removed if that happens.  I always try to post a comment with at least a link to the original on your website.

Maybe there are just tons of attack squirrels attacking bikers?  Maybe not.

The Squirrel Story is the first thing of yours I ever read...and I had to hunt to find out who you were because it was not attributed...but it was not a for profit situation.  As the publisher of a 7 month old, struggling magazine, I would love to know the process I have to follow to reprint some of your stories and introduce you to my readers.  I would have no problem posting a link both to this site and to Lulu/Amazon as well.
My first effort at writing a short story since my college days (the early 70's pre Stephen King) will be published in Panhandle Biker's June issue...and I would be grateful for a critique if you find the time.

Thanks,
David (Lizard) Woodby

Daniel,

I recently forwarded a link to one of your stories on your site (that had me laughing on the floor) to my brother in Houston (Spring), TX (I'm in Utah) - he loved it as well.  I told him to check out your other stories as well, and to keep a lookout for the squirrel story since I couldn't find it on your site at the time - It sure seems like I read it there.   Can you post a link to it?  I want him to get it straight from your site.

I ride an '83 Yamaha Venture - commute an hour to & from work in Park City, Utah, and my brother rides a smaller bike to work in Houston.

Love your stories to death and will be ordering at least your first book soon.

Thanks so much,

Doug

It's in "road stories". The story is called "Neighborhood Hazard (or, 'Why the Cops Won't Patrol Brice Street')"

The direct link is:

Glad you enjoyed!
