Hi, I'm a Brit living in Bristol.  I'm looking to start riding this year, in part because of the articles I've read on this website.  Haven't read the books yet, but once I find some I will.  Does anybody have any advice for a tall youngish (25) and still poor chap that wants to start riding around Britain?

I'm thinking of getting a small (125cc) dual-sport bike of some description for my test and the first couple of years, then doing the full license test once I got some experience and trading up a couple of hundred ccs.

I know next to nothing about riding or gear, whats good and whats not.  Any suggestions?  Manufacturers to steer clear of?

Welcome!

Your plan for a smaller machine to start is a good one. Don't invest a lot. You will outgrow it fast.

Here in the states we have the MSF (motorcycle safety foundation). For a reasonable fee, the provide a weekend of classrom and riding training, actual on bike experience. They provide the bike.

Check and see if there is an equivilent organization where you are. That is an invaluable way to get introduced to riding.
