Thinking about trying a car tire on my scoot but... Update success!
Stickyfrog:
...has anyone ever heard of a 12 inch car tire. My stock rear is a 130/70 12 but I have had a 140 on it as well. I think it would be a worthwhile experiment as I only get about 3500 on a rear. Problem is I am having a hard time finding a car tire that would work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. :)
Daniel Meyer:
I know there are 12" trailer tires, but I've never heard of a 12" car tire.
Of course, they are making some small cars nowadays...check out the prius or the like and see what they use. Often new sizes take a bit to make it to the common market.
Stickyfrog:
The original Geo Metro came with a 12 inch wheel but most converted up when 12 inch wheels became scarce. I found this one http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?width=145%2F&ratio=80&diameter=12&x=29&y=11 It is 145/80-12 which may be to wide and a bit tall. Will keep looking.

OK I finally saved up the bucks and had time to try it. I ordered the tire in my last post and mounted it. Good news...it fit the rim perfectly. Bad news...it is too tall. I can get it on the axle but the tire is butted up to the rear of the engine...just about 1/2 inch too big >:( Oh well, I will keep looking for a fit.

sticky, them Yokohamas are great tires. I had sets of them on two trucks and got near 100k out of each set. You should be able to get that same tire in a smaller sidewall - aspect ratio.. example: if your tire is a 120mm / 60aspect ratio = 72mm sidewall x 2+ 12"rim dia = 17.76"dia. /2 =8.88" axle center to rubber.
measure your max distance axle center to swingarm/frame(contact points). then go find a tire that comes in under that number.
out, ponch
