BLACK HILLS
« on: May 24, 2012, 06:09:25 PM »

My husband and I are thinking of riding to the Black Hills area of South Dakota.  I'm looking / asking for any suggestions of what to be sure and do while we are there. Or anything we should avoid, ha ha  Also since we will be riding there from Houston Texas. if anyone knows of anything we should see or do along the way, please let me know.  We are planning to avoid the big cities such as Dallas and Oklahoma City.  We like the scenic routes better.

Thanks!

Mount Rushmore of course...but also check out the Crazy Horse monument.

The statue in the foreground, is what they are carving in the mountain in the distance.

I have been to Sturgis during the rally several times.  Riding in the black hills is a great experience.  I would suggest for a location you might want to try Custer SD.  Great small town, reasonable prices, very close to Custer State Park.  Nice clean restaurant in town call the Wrangler.  Great buffalo sausage breakfast......

As to riding, Needles highway, Spearfish Canyon, Ride out to Hullet WY, Iron Mountain Road.  All Challenging rides.  Down forget to ride out to Belfusch SD, the center of the contential US, if you include all 50 states.

Other sites, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse Deadwood, and others to see.  Take the time to ride the BadLands, the loop through the park is great and remember to look out for snakes.  I almost stepped on a rattler once near the road.  Wall Drug store in Wall SD is a must see.  A big tourist trap but worth while none the less.

IF you really have a desire to see the west, extend your trip to go see Little Big Horn, you won't be disappointed.

Enjoy the Black Hills, they are a great place to ride.

Couple of more suggestions for you, was there last August.

Take Vanocker Canyon Road south of Sturgis down to Nemo.  Great ride with 60 mph curves, not much traffic.  Then take Nemo Road either north to connect with 385 to Lead and Deadwood, or south into Rapid City.

Also Highway 87 between 16 and 385.  Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway are must rides.  Make sure you take Iron Mountain Road from the southeast to northwest, that way you get the views of Mount Rushmore through the tunnels.

Spearfish Canyon is gorgeous, but you will have a more traffic.  The wildlife loup in Custer State Park pretty much guarantees seeing buffalo, sometimes up close and personal.  8)

Enjoy the ride, by far the most fun riding I've experienced.

For your ride up, take Highway 2 or 20 through the Sandhills of Nebraska.

 :)
We got back from our trip last Monday the 24th.  ;D ;D  We left Houston on the 14th and went up through Kansas and Nebraska.  We saw Mt. Rushmore of course, Custer State Park, Needles Highway, Spearfish Canyon etc and came back through Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico.  We had really good weather and no issues.  Great trip 3400 miles of awesome!!   Our bikes are really dirty and we have not had time to clean them up yet due to work, death in family and rain.
