Valkyrie Rear Fender Nut Cage Mod

One common modification to the Honda Valkyrie is to remove the "nut cages" under the rear fender segment:

This is done for several reasons...examples:
1) To provide clearance for a "Darkside" tire (see my Darkside article)
2) To make removal/replacement of the rear fender segment MUCH easier.
3) To facilitate installation of non-stock bolts...for instance to install a trailer hitch or bag stand-offs.

This is a simple modification.
1) Remove the rear fender segment.
2) Split the nut cage.
3) Break the pieces of the nut cage off the fender.
4) Spray a quick dab of black paint on the raw metal to prevent future corrosion.
5) Install the rear fender segment (don't forget to plug in your taillight wiring harness!)

You can see the nut cage here. It is normally just tack welded to the fender.
Nut cage

Split the nut cage with a hacksaw or good side-cutters. Don't be tempted to just grind it off the fender or you will blister the paint on the other side.

Work the pieces back and forth. They are just tack welded on and normally will break cleanly off the fender.
Remove the pieces

Note that one of these did not break cleanly. This was due to a former repair (not mine) and the firmly welded the nut cage on one side. I will carefully clean this up with a grinder. Note that the other side came away clean. This is the norm...
Removed

Do the other side and you are done. I also replaced the ungainly square lug things with self-locking nuts and a washer. My rear fender is now much easier to remove and install, and I have the clearance for my darkside tire.

Hope that helps!

Daniel Meyer
