Perhaps a little introduction is in order for this one:
A late night summer ride started out well, got ugly, got mean, got worse, then turned out all right. Bad guys punished, damsel in distress rescued, reluctant hero had nightmares for weeks.
I usually write up any interesting rides, but this was a bit too dark, too violent for my usual fare. I tried several times, but failed to produce anything coherent in story form. My journal entry for this day is a mess. The poem seemed to work, so here it is:
Monsters in the Night
Deep within the night Where the monsters roam I find myself among them And so very far from home
Why have I come here? I really cannot say Forces in my soul said I had to ride that day
The balmy midnight air Really makes my spirit sing The lust to ride, this need to see Is a solid and tangible thing
In the night I find A lady in distress Honor is required Can I pass this test?
Calm I am by nature I have principles from my youth The evil think this means I’m soft Nothing’s further from the truth
Attackers three, can’t let them be Intent is very plain Only I’m in place to act To prevent their causing pain
My courage does not fail me Attackers are dissuaded Strength's again my ally They were forcefully persuaded
I rarely start a battle Which is really just as well ‘cause once it’s clear that I must finish it I’ll send them straight to Hell
Away she finally travels Safety in the night The cost for me was great As I really hate to fight
The pain is vast, the bruises real All will heal in time I revel in the strength inside Never gladder it is mine
I was brought here for a reason Forces compelling me to roam My task is finished, I am released The Dragon’s headed home
