Route 66--Index
Route 66--Sort Of--
Route 66. That's another trip that's always on the minds of motorcyclists. With a road trip in mind, but no further plans other than visiting some friends, I decided I'd make the trip. California was a worthy destination, and if I timed it right, I could make the California VRCC Yosemite weekend as well. I envisioned heading north to visit a friend or two, then catching "America's Road" at Chigago and taking it all the way to Los Angles.
The reality was very different. Route 66 is more of an attitude than it is a route. It would take me 8000 miles to figure that out.
What follows is a series of short stories I wrote during and after the trip. Many were published in The Dallas Morning News on Saturdays beginning in September and running through the end of October. Since news sometimes can edit the soul right out of a story, these are updated, expanded, and reedited over their original appearance. I'm sure I'll add more, and longer chapters later.
I hope you enjoy and as always, I welcome comments.
Introduction A rider that writes.
Part 1--See You Again (CUAgain) “Los Angles,” I replied, “by way of Wisconsin.”
Part 2--Friends in Far Away Places I am, quite enthusiastically, just not any reasonable person.
Part 3--A Coin Toss West it was...
Part 4--Westbound I’ll bet I can make it in five.
Part 5--It's About the Ride “Hail huh? Well, ten bucks seems a bit expensive to get hailed on. How about half price?”
Part 6--Very Large Things, Very Large Places She smiled impishly up at me. “Are you asking me out?”
Part 7--Dream Incredible Things, Build Big Stuff Come and see.
Part 8--O 2 B N L A I swear that wasn’t me screaming in terror.
Part 9--The Long Way There is a difference in how a place is perceived that is created by how the observer travels there.
Part 10--No Man Left Behind I’d just have to push harder tomorrow.
Part 11--Homecoming Maybe I would even make it.
Afterword Are you ready?
CUAgain, Daniel Meyer
